Due to the Carpatians, the potential of Romania is extremely rich. That's why the number of the mountain resorts was increased in the same time with the modernization works. Her e are t he main ski resorts in Romania :
Stana de Vale (Bihor County) and Semenic (Caras-Severin County) are two smaller resorts located in the west of Romania, in Apuseni Mountains and Banat Mountains. Even if they do not benefit of a good infrastructure, nature and the hosts compensate these lacks. The altitude of those resortes is between 1,100 and 1,400 m, inducing a mild climat (especially in Semenic) and huge quantities of snow (especially in Stana de Vale). Poiana Brasov , Brasov County, located in the south-east of Transylvania, 13 km away from Brasov. Altitude 1,030 m. The skiing domain offers great conditions for this sport both for the beginners and professionals. The apres-ski facilities gave the fane of this resort. The vicinity allows trips in some Medieval towns (Brasov), and strenghtened churches (Prejmer, Harman - maximum 30 km), Bran
(the castle is 25 km away) or the peasant fortress from Rasnov (10 km). In the same Brasov County, 145 km north from Bucharest, between Postavaru and Piatra Mare Mountains , Predeal resort is located. It is the highest urban settlement in Romania with altitudes of more than 1,000 m. It offers good conditions for skiing both in the day nad the night time. The resort has also artificial snow. The neighbouring chalets offers the best trips to the tourism objectives located at maximum 25 km away (Sinaia with Peles Castle and George Enescu Museum, Brasov with the Black Church and Schei district), Bran or Rasnov. In northern Carpathians there is Borsa resort, at the base of Rodnei peak ( over 2300 m high).
Close to Bucharest (around 125-135 km away), in Prahova County, three famous resorts are located revealing in brief the history of the Romanian mountain tourism from two different perspectives: Sinaia , the resort with skiing tracks up to 2,000 m altitude both for advanced and beginners. Similar to Sinaia, Azuga has two skiing tracks designed in the last years. In the same time, Azuga offers as well as Busteni all the conditions required by randonee. Recently, the works for a new skiing track were begun. All these resorts are located at altitude between 800 and 950 m, while the tracks reach even 2,000 m. Paltinis , a resort located at an altitude of 1,400 m, in Sibiu County, in the north of Cindrel Mountains, offers the best conditions for skiing and snowboard as well as for randonee in the neighbourhood. Vatra Dornei (Suceava County) gained the fame of one of the best active tourism resorts in the north of the country, alongside the spa reputation.
